Our Heritage & Tradition
Shorinjiryu Kentokukan Karatedo
History & Ranks
The Wa-no Kaze Kai Karate Club is a traditional registered non-profit karate dojo (school) studying SHORINJIRYU KENTOKUKAN KARATEDO. The Kentokukan school is the result of Chinese, Okinawan, Japanese, and Canadian influences. The founder, Shinan Wayne Donivan (9th dan, Doshu) studied in Canada and Japan with two of Shorinjiryu Karatedo's most influential teachers, Masayoshi Kori Hisataka, the founder of the Kenkokan School, and his son Masayuki Kukan Hisataka. The Kentokukan hombu dojo is located in Montreal, Quebec. (www.kentokukan.com)
The formal opening of the Wa-no Kaze Kai dojo was in May 1995. It is the sole officially sanctioned dojo in Alberta to study Kentokukan Karatedo. For over 30 years, Adult and Junior students have attained black belt ranks. In May 2025, Cindy Jones was awarded the title of Kyoshi (7th Dan), and Daryl Jones the title of Shihan (6th Dan). Both have been practicing karate in Athabasca since 1989. Our Blackbelt instructors also include Sensei John Day (4th Dan), Alyssa Day (3rd Dan), and Evan Day (2nd Dan).
